Skype, an application for making free calls over the internet (though making calls to real phones is not free), has finally been released for non-Windows computers. Finally, there is a single application for making calls between any two computers on the Net, which integrates cleanly with landline and cell phones. I have not actually used this app, and am not really ready to do so myself. But now that it is available for MacOS X, I will be keeping an eye on things. Once the first bugs are ironed out, I will jump in with at least one foot.
