I got a call late yesterday from the Apple Store. My Macbook is healed and ready for pickup. Of course, they made me sign something saying I understood that all of my data might go ka-plouie, so I expect I will have a lot of data restoration to do. Luckily, I had run a backup only a couple of weeks back. This should mean I'll be able to post more often starting Saturday or so. My experiment with a Linux (Ubuntu) laptop has been a pleasant surprise - it has been VERY useable and let me do everything I needed to do. But it still ain't as easy or fun to use as my Mac.

Woo-Hoo!!! Welcome home Mac.
:-)
I have to say, that story scared me. I have Chronosync for my Mac but never had time to set up rules to sync with my backup drive. Needless to say, I am performing that task right now and will set up an automated schedule.
On a related note, my pro blog database had some corrupt tables, so I am repairing the tables and setting up a backup solution for that as well :)
IT hasn't been idyllic since I have gotten the Mac back. Carbon Copy Cloner got all my data... EXCEPT the password file. So I can't log into the disk image. So I had to manually reinstall MacOS X and now I am copying back my files one by one.
It will all work out in the end, but it will be a pain. And because of that, I am still on the Linux laptop as of this morning. Sigh.
A nickels worth of free advice to any Mac owner looking to maximize the ease of their restoration. BACK UP TO A FIREWIRE DRIVE AND NOT A USB DRIVE. This lets you boot more easily and the internal "transfer settings" function in MacOS X will only work with a Firewire drive.
But I think I am almost back up. IF anyone else needs help recovering from this, feel free to drop me a note.
