You have to wonder if the poor polling results are because so many have been changing their minds so often or because many people no longer respond honestly to pollsters.
I think the second option explains a lot. When polls began (say the 1960s) people were so happy to have their opinions taken seriously that they answered honestly. By 2000 the fun had worn off and the world had gotten more cynical and people feel free to lie. Of course, lying has become much more common and accepted, too.
