Olympic gold medalist and hero to many Michael Phelps admitted today to smoking Marijuana after a photo surfaced of him smoking using a bong. Why do so many people ruin their image with one night's pleasure? (Assuming they found the smoking pleasurable.) WHy risk the millions of dollars for it? It is too bad. Michael Phelpls seems like a good young man.

Ah, the folly of youth! He probably feels he missed out on a lot of youthful things while he was in extreme training, and he really was not cool. But now that he is famous and has beautiful women all over him all the time, he probably thinks it is time to let his hair down, so to speak. But as many young people fail to realize, these little (or large) slips can have real consequences. His image is certainly tainted. It might not cost him all, but as a mother, it would make a difference in how I allowd my children to view him.
He has the advantage of this happening now. It's still almost 4 years until the next Olympics and provided he doesn't have a slip like this again, he'll be fine the next time his popularity spikes again. Had this happened in 6-12 months it would be even less of a story than it is now.
