President Obama releases his birth certificate

If you were a doubter, here you go. Although, I doubt very much this will silence those who align themselves with the "birther" movement. But here's hoping this forestalls months and months of pointless debate during the actual 2012 presidential campaign among the serious candidates.

If any of our Mod-Blog readers were among the doubters, what is your reaction to this development. And do you agree with Donald Trump that it is all due to him?

I wouldn't have aligned myself with the "birther" movement, but I assumed that Obama not releasing his birth certificate meant that he had something to hide. The fact that he released it two years after the fact isn't completely settling since the question still exists, "If there was nothing to hide, why didn't he release it before?" That being said, I think it was a pre-election issue. By this point, nothing would probably happen even if he wasn't born in the U.S.

A friend online had a useful perspective on this. The request sounds VERY different to "white" ears versus "black" ears. To african-americans, it reminds them of the post-emancipation, pre-civil rights era when whites used "show me your papers" as a way to deny blacks jobs, voting rights, etc. (Kind of like the Soviets used it against people they didn't like in the Communist era.) So, the request was more offensive than you might think, if your past is like mine.

Thanks... that actually makes a lot of sense.
