Did you know you're over $2 trillion in debt?
It is easy to think of "the government" as some vague, faceless entity that is "out there" somewhere. But we have a government "of the people, by the people, for the people" in the words of Abraham Lincoln. And that means, essentially you are the government. Therefore, you are over $2 trillion in debt. And it's only getting worse.
The government's net operating cost, or deficit, in the report grew to $2.080 trillion for the year ended September 30 from $1.253 trillion the prior year as spending and liabilities increased for social programs. Actual and anticipated revenues were roughly unchanged. One wonders exactly what you will do when this debt comes due? I am pretty sure winning the lottery is not an option.
The cash budget deficit narrowed in fiscal 2010 to $1.294 trillion from $1.417 trillion in 2009. But the $858 billion tax cut extension package enacted last week is expected to keep the deficit well above the $1 trillion mark for another year.

Government encourages donations to pay down National Debt
No, really. While many Americans are looking for more reasons to avoid paying taxes, the Treasury has set up a special fund to take donations to ease the National Debt. Of course, at $7.6 trillion, it will take more than a penny drive to make a difference.
The U.S. Treasury Department accepts gifts, payable to the Bureau of the Public Debt. Just mail them to the attention of Department G, Post Office Box 2188, Parkersburg, West Virginia, 26106-2188. Make a note in the memo section that it is a gift to reduce the debt held by the public...One wonders how long the donations will be truly voluntary.
According to Treasury spokesman Kim Treat, people do send checks. In the last fiscal year they added up to a little over $3 million, which was the highest total since at least 1996.
Some include notes. Common reasons for donating include a sense of patriotism and immigrants expressing their thanks to the United States for giving them an opportunity, he said.

Do you laugh or cry?
The National Debt Clock in New York City is now too small to display the actual debt for the USA. I have got to say, we need a Ross Perot at these debates to force Obama and McCain to prove they actually will improve the situation. Right now, I think both are more likely to add fuel to the fire.
