I tend to like John McCain more often then not. His views are close to mine on a number of issues. But lately, I've had the urge to write to Bill Frist and ask him to duct-tape McCain's mouth. This weekend, he was at his worse trying to sound like the compassionate moderate but failing. Instead, he sounded more like one of the brain-dead leftists that he should be standing against.
The man's got a lot of good things to say and I think he represents the middle/conservative part of the party well. But sometimes it really just seems like he's trying to hard to be moderate and ends up going overboard. The argument that we need more troops? Fallujah erased that doubt for anyone watching. Attacking the Pentagon policies? Who is he, Nancy Pelosi? Trying to get the government involved in private sports? What kind of conservative idea is that? Arguing tired Geneva Convention talking points that we all know don't even hold up legally in fighting terrorists?
I'm not saying that McCain went liberal this weekend. But I am saying that he sure didn't come across as a moderate with any kind of backbone. He seemed to be blowing in the wind, and that's no place for a leader.
